Hawaii Senator: ‘Maui Shouldn’t be Used as a Political Talking Point’ in GOP Wildfire Attacks

Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) emphasized the need for federal resources and bipartisan support in helping the residents of Maui recover from the devastating wildfires. He stated that Maui should not be treated as a mere political talking point, but rather as a community in need of assistance.

Having witnessed the ongoing devastation in historic Lahaina town, Schatz called for rebuilding efforts that include getting children back in school, reestablishing a health center, and restoring water infrastructure. The death toll stands at 115, with 388 people still unaccounted for. The fires have resulted in the destruction of 2,220 buildings and caused damage estimated between $4 billion and $10 billion.

To address the long road to recovery, Schatz is working on a supplemental appropriations bill that will require billions of dollars from the federal government. He refrained from estimating the exact cost but emphasized the necessity of substantial federal support.

Recently, a bipartisan congressional delegation visited fire-ravaged Lahaina and met with survivors and responders. However, even this tragedy has not escaped partisan disputes. Republicans have criticized President Joe Biden’s response, including his initial “no comment” and the issuance of $700 checks for immediate needs. Former Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard also criticized the checks. Senator Schatz defended the federal government’s efforts, highlighting the distribution of $12 million in assistance to households and the deployment of over 1,000 federal workers.

Schatz urged a focus on supporting the people on the ground, such as search and rescue teams, Red Cross workers, social workers, pharmacists, and firefighters who have lost their own homes in the wildfires. He called for bipartisan unity and relief for the affected residents.

Regarding climate change, Schatz asserted the connection between human-caused climate change and the increasing frequency and severity of natural disasters. However, he stressed the importance of prioritizing the needs of the Maui residents and refraining from turning the disaster into a platform for ideological arguments.

Schatz cautioned against premature finger-pointing and emphasized the ongoing investigations into the causes of the disaster. He believes that while accountability is necessary, it should not prevent immediate help from being provided.

The House Oversight and Accountability Committee, led by Republicans, has initiated an investigation into the federal government’s response to the Maui wildfires to ensure efficient and effective use of taxpayer dollars.

In conclusion, Senator Schatz called for unity, assistance, and relief for the residents of Maui, emphasizing the importance of bipartisan support and federal resources in the recovery efforts.
