A year ago today, on June 11th, 2022, a judge in Los Angeles set a trial date of October 10th for Harvey Weinstein, a disgraced former film producer who is facing charges related to sexual misconduct involving five women. The 70-year-old appeared in court for the scheduling hearing wearing brown jail clothes and seated in a wheelchair. He is facing 11 felony charges.
The trial will begin with prospective jurors being summoned to Los Angeles Superior Court to complete questionnaires about their familiarity with the case and their ability to serve. The entire process, including jury selection, is expected to take around eight weeks.
Initially charged in January 2020 with forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, and sexual penetration by use of force involving one woman on February 18th, 2013, and sexual battery by restraint involving another woman the next day, Weinstein was subsequently charged in April 2020 with sexual battery by restraint involving another woman. In November 2020, prosecutors added six more counts, three counts each of forcible rape and forcible oral copulation, involving two alleged victims in Beverly Hills between 2004 and 2010. The grand jury subsequently indicted Weinstein on the same charges.
Weinstein was extradited from New York on July 20th, where he has been sentenced to 23 years in prison for raping an aspiring actress and a criminal sex act against a former production assistant. He is renowned for producing acclaimed films such as “Shakespeare in Love,” which was awarded the Best Picture Oscar in 1999, and “Pulp Fiction.”
