Harry Takes The Sun’s Publisher to Trial in January 2025: A Look into his Legal Claim

The Duke of Sussex is taking legal action against The Sun’s publisher over allegations of illegal information gathering, with the trial set to take place in January 2025, according to the High Court. The claim is that Prince Harry was targeted by journalists and private investigators working for News Group Newspapers (NGN), the publisher of The Sun and News of the World. There are expected to be two trials for the numerous active claims against the publisher regarding phone hacking and other illegal information gathering activities. The preliminary hearing revealed that 32 people, including British actor Hugh Grant and the Duke of Sussex, have cases set for trial in January 2024. Additionally, there are 27 cases set for trial in January 2025. However, these numbers may change as the proceedings progress. Meanwhile, 18 claims against NGN have already been settled since August. The July ruling in the case partially blocked Harry’s claim related to phone hacking allegations against the publisher but allowed the claim over other allegations, such as the use of private investigators, to proceed to trial. The judge also denied the use of an alleged “secret agreement” between the royal family and Rupert Murdoch’s senior executives as part of Harry’s claim. NGN’s spokesperson called the ruling a “significant victory” for the publisher. The next hearing in the NGN claims is scheduled for December.
