Harriet Walter Shares How Her Experiences with Aristocracy Inspired Her Succession Character

Lady Caroline is the formidable matriarch of the Roy family, known for her cutting personality. She is the second wife of Logan Roy, portrayed by Brian Cox, and the mother of Kendall, Shiv, and Roman. Aside from her family connections, Lady Caroline is also a wealthy aristocrat who mingles with people of her social status, as shared by Dame Harriet during an interview with the Brydon & podcast hosted by Rob Brydon.

In the podcast, Dame Harriet talks about her portrayal of Lady Caroline and reveals that it is a combination of various individuals she has encountered throughout her life. She believes that as an actor, to accurately depict a character, one must closely observe people who either intimidate or inspire them. For Dame Harriet, it has been her encounters with cold, snooty, and quick-witted individuals that have influenced her portrayal of Lady Caroline.

Despite her own family’s ties to wealth and privilege, Dame Harriet describes her upbringing as not particularly affluent. However, she explains that her family had connections with wealthy individuals who owned grand estates, allowing her to brush shoulders with the aristocracy. Although she didn’t belong to that elite circle, she became acquainted with their behavior and mannerisms, which ended up influencing her entire family. Their interactions were characterized by light-heartedness, avoiding serious topics or discussions about personal matters. Flippant and glib conversations were the norm.

Dame Harriet Walter comes from a lineage of successful actors, with her uncle being the renowned Christopher Lee. However, she reveals that she approached her career with more seriousness and dedication than her uncle did. She explains that his experiences in the war, witnessing death and liberation of death camps, gave him a different perspective, causing him not to take his career as seriously.

Recounting her childhood aspirations, Dame Harriet shares her disappointment when visiting her uncle on a movie set. Despite her fascination with acting, she was let down by the reality of the industry as observed through her uncle’s work.

The Brydon & podcast can be found on Amazon Music and Wondery+, and a new podcast called Terribly Famous is set to launch this week across all podcast platforms.
