Harman Takes the Lead in British Open as McIlroy Hopes for Breakthrough

The 76 players who managed to survive the cut, narrowly saving Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay, Rickie Fowler, and Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked player in the world, are anticipated to face increased taxation. Notably, this cut-off also eliminated prominent figures such as Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Collin Morikawa, and Justin Thomas, last year’s P.G.A. Championship winner who disappointingly missed three of four major cuts this year.

Thomas acknowledged the ups and downs that every player experiences, stating, “Everybody has their waves, their kind of momentum and rides and rock bottoms, whatever you want to call it.” Thomas, whose highest major finish this year was a tie for 65th at the P.G.A. Championship in May, admitted being caught off guard by some poor rounds but remained optimistic about his comeback.

Interestingly, it was the lesser-known players who found themselves in closer proximity to Harman. Shubhankar Sharma, who has never achieved higher than a tie for 51st at a major, quietly posted two rounds of par or better to reach three under, matching Min Woo Lee. Former world No. 1, Jason Day, joined them after an impressive 67 on Friday.

Slightly ahead of them was Sepp Straka, who also completed the second round with a 67.

Tommy Fleetwood, hailing from nearby Southport and starting Friday with a share of the lead, finished at even par, securing second place but trailing Harman by five shots.

The morning leaders lost their footing as the day progressed. Emiliano Grillo had a double-bogey on the second hole and a bogey on the third, while his feeble recovery on the back nine further crumbled with bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes, leaving him eight shots off the lead with a disappointing 74 for the day. Christo Lamprecht, a 22-year-old amateur from Georgia Tech, had a rough start, bogeying five of the first seven holes on Friday, plummeting down the leaderboard to the extent that his eligibility to make the cut remained uncertain during his round.
