Hamish de Bretton-Gordon Reveals Concerns: Russian Air Force’s Incompetence Risks Sparking NATO Conflict

It is crucial to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation at hand. Recently, the BBC revealed that just a year ago, a technological mishap brought us dangerously close to a war between Nato and Russia.

During this incident, an unarmed RAF surveillance aircraft, flying over the Black Sea in international airspace, was targeted by an incompetent or potentially deranged Russian pilot.

Fortunately, the first missile failed to hit its intended mark, and the second fell harmlessly into the sea.

Had either missile been successful, the consequences would have been catastrophic. This incident could have easily sparked World War III, resulting in the loss of British crew members and their aircraft in neutral airspace.

A powerful response from Nato would have been inevitable, considering the vulnerability of Russia’s paper-thin army against a modern Western force.

The complete annihilation of Russian assets outside their borders through missile and jet strikes would have been likely within hours. The remaining forces would have no choice but to surrender or even resort to nuclear options.

The gravity of the potential outcome explains why the UK and possibly the US tried to conceal the true nature of the event for an extended period.

However, this incident paints a worrisome picture of the incompetence within the Russian air force. It is highly likely that there have been other instances of pilot errors and miscalculations.

Of particular concern is the revelation that Russian pilots either refuse to follow orders or receive confusing and ambiguous instructions. This significantly heightens the risk of a repeat incident.

Given this context, the best way to avert another catastrophe would be to neutralize the Russian air force. If they struggle to hit a large target at close range, their chances against F-16s would be abysmal.

By expediting the delivery of modern aircraft, Western fighter jets can swiftly eliminate any possibility of Russian air superiority. This, in turn, would provide Ukrainian armored formations with the necessary space to maneuver and achieve breakthroughs.

Moreover, it would allow UK intelligence to continue playing a critical role in this conflict. Russian attempts to hinder British information-gathering activities in the Black Sea can be thwarted with the help of “spies in the skies.” Through comprehensive surveillance, British forces can accurately target and neutralize vital Russian naval assets using Storm Shadow missiles.

Unquestionably, this must be infuriating Putin. Hence, it is no surprise that he is desperately seeking support from North Korea’s dictator. His forces are depleting ammunition reserves with minimal impact.

Currently, he is even resorting to requesting outdated Soviet-era shells, while Ukraine continues to receive modern Western armaments.

A desperate individual poses a significant threat.

Nato must operate with utmost precision to prevent another “accidental” event from being exploited as an excuse for de-escalation. It is also crucial that the recluse occupying the Kremlin does not push the world towards Armageddon. (© Telegraph Media Group Ltd 2023)
