Delegates from the Palestinian militant group Hamas had an unexpected meeting with Russian officials in Moscow on Thursday, as reported by state-run media. This meeting marks Hamas’ first visit to Russia since their surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7. The Foreign Ministry of Russia confirmed the visit and stated that it aligns with Russia’s position, which includes advocating for the immediate release of foreign hostages in the Gaza Strip and ensuring the safe evacuation of Russian and other foreign citizens from the area.
The Hamas delegation, led by senior member Moussa Abu Marzouk, held talks with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov. During the discussions, the delegates expressed their appreciation for President Vladimir Putin’s position and Russia’s diplomatic efforts regarding the ongoing conflict between Hamas and Israel.
In addition, it was revealed that Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas is scheduled to travel to Moscow soon for talks with President Putin, according to Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister.
Russia has emphasized its goal of mediating the war between Israel and Hamas while maintaining relations with both parties. This strategy enables Russia to retain its influence in the Middle East and play a significant role in resolving the conflict.
However, the timing of the Hamas visit raises questions, as it comes shortly after their attack on Israel, which prompted an intense bombing campaign by the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip. The attacks led to the capture of over 200 people, including several Russian citizens, who are believed to be held captive by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups.
