Gymnastic Ireland Apologizes After Thriving Young Black Gymnast Skips During Medal Ceremony – National Controversy Ensues

Gymnastics Ireland has issued an apology and condemned racism after a judge appeared to snub a young Black gymnast at a medal ceremony. A video of the incident resurfaced and went viral on social media. In the clip from March 2022, a group of young girls stand in line to receive participation medals, and the judge skipped the only Black gymnast. The incident was criticized for its racist implications, and Gymnastics Ireland released a statement apologizing to the girl and her family. They stated that the incident should not have happened and promised that measures would be taken to prevent a recurrence. The family had filed a complaint with the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation in Switzerland, which resulted in the apology. However, the family expressed dissatisfaction with the organization’s response, stating that it did not address the issues of racism and safety. U.S. Olympic gold medallist Simone Biles reached out to the young Black gymnast with a video message and emphasized that there is no room for racism in any sport or in society.
