Gwyneth Paltrow is challenging the societal “double standard” that celebrates men as they age while devaluing women.
In a recent interview with British Vogue, the founder of Goop, Gwyneth Paltrow, who is 50 years old, expressed her acceptance of embracing aging and criticized the cultural expectation that women should resist the natural process of getting older.
Paltrow highlighted the issue of women being judged more harshly for aging compared to men, stating, “As women, we want to be healthy, we want to embrace aging. This idea that we’re expected to defy time is bizarre.”
She commended celebrities like Andie MacDowell who have embraced their natural aging process, such as MacDowell’s decision to stop coloring her hair during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Paltrow stated, “I love it when I hear someone like Andie MacDowell, with her beautiful gray curls, talking about embracing aging and the contrasting treatment of aging male stars like George Clooney versus female stars.”
She added, “It’s considered attractive for men to go gray, but for women, it’s like they’re expected to fight wrinkles and aging skin.”
The “Avengers” actor, who appreciates seeing positive examples of aging, encouraged women to embrace aging on their own terms.
“Some women may choose to address aesthetic concerns, while others may want to embrace a more natural approach like being a fabulous French grandmother. Everyone should have the freedom to age how they desire,” declared Paltrow.
Paltrow is not alone in calling out sexist double standards. Just recently, actress Gabrielle Union confronted ageist internet trolls who criticized her for wearing a thong bikini at the age of 50.
In September 2022, Paltrow, whose Goop brand offers various anti-aging products, openly accepted her wrinkles, stating in a self-published essay on Goop’s website.
