Guide to the West Highlands for Whisky Distillers

My introduction to this stunning locale began when my parents acquired the Drimnin Estate, located on the breathtaking Morvern Peninsula nearly two decades ago. My first visit felt like we were venturing into the serene heart of nowhere, but in a good way. The West Highlands, an expansive area that includes Morvern, is strikingly isolated yet vibrant with normal daily activities. Life goes on, just at a slower pace, where even something as simple as grocery runs or pub crawls takes longer.

You can reach Morvern either by taking the romantic sleeper train from Fort William or driving through the picturesque, mountainous landscape of Glencoe post a train ride from Glasgow. Choosing either option proves worthwhile, though the sleeper train stands out for me as it passes Ben Nevis.

Upon arrival, I relish going on hikes among the densely treed hills of Morvern, especially during autumn when the colours enchant. I would love to have a walking partner like Clare Holohan of West Highland Herbal, Lochaline, who specializes in herbal medicine, consultations, walks, and retreats. She has a unique ability to make walks incredibly awe-inspiring by showcasing edible flora and fauna and their potential medicinal usage.

The pride and joy of the region, the Nc’nean distillery, would be next on the to-do list. This distillery produces exceptional, sustainably made Scotch that I’m proud to offer as my contribution to this remarkable region. My relationship with this area shifted when I founded Nc’nean and quit my job in London to focus on it.

Another must-visit locale is Alan Hayman’s gallery located in the estate. Alan, a Montrose-born artist, paints lovely pictures of Scotland’s west coast with an unmatchable fervour. A favourite spot for dinner is The Whitehouse in Lochaline. Their locally sourced, well-cooked food is an unforgettable experience.

Tobermory in Mull is another place I urge you to visit. The beautiful multicoloured houses lining the harbourfront and the fantastic natural harbour are sure to impress. My go-to dining spot here is Cafe Fish, which offers the freshest, simply cooked fish, mainly shellfish which this area is renowned for. Wash it down with drinks at the Mishnish, a famous sailor’s pub established in 1869.

I am an absolute cheese lover, and nothing beats the Isle of Mull Cheese shop. These cheese makers have employed a sustainable ethos like Nc’nean by incorporating a traditional dairy with 130 grass-fed cows. You must try their two cheeses – Isle of Mull and Hebridean Blue. When cheese is that exceptional, crackers are unnecessary.

A boat trip is an ideal way to soak in the breathtaking surroundings. On a good day, you might spot whales, dolphins, or porpoises, and golden- and white-tailed eagles soaring overhead. The Hebridean Princess, with its 28 cabins, can take you anywhere along the west coast. Head over to Staffa island and explore Fingal’s Cave, famous for its dramatic rock formations.

Oban is the main town south of Morvern with grand stone houses adorning its seafront. Renowned for its seafood, I recommend the Oban Whisky & Fine Wines Shop for an exceptional experience. For local souvenirs, Ardalanish Weavers on Mull create remarkable, handwoven textiles from local wool to make elegant clothes, scarves or blankets.

Scotland’s weather is infamous for being rainy and plagued with midges. Although I cannot say I love midges, the region remains unforgettable, especially during the summer months with the extended daylight. However, the quieter months, such as March and October, also have plenty to offer, minus the midges.
