Grimes Stands Up for Lizzo Amid Lawsuit from Singer’s Former Dancers

  • Grimes came to Lizzo’s defense through a series of Twitter posts on Sunday.
  • Three former dancers of Lizzo filed a lawsuit against her on Tuesday.
  • The dancers accused Lizzo of sexual harassment, weight-shaming, and false imprisonment.

Grimes criticized cancel culture while defending Lizzo, who is facing a lawsuit from three former backup dancers accusing her of creating a toxic work environment.

Grimes took to Twitter on Sunday, expressing support for the singer known as “X.” The dancers, Crystal Williams, Arianna Davis, and Noelle Rodriguez, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday, alleging that Lizzo sexually harassed them, engaged in weight-shaming, and treated Black dancers with less respect than others.

“Not saying I don’t believe people when bad things happen, but I had dancers mistreated on my watch in ways I didn’t find out about until later,” wrote Grimes, who shares two children with X owner Elon Musk. “Maybe things are bad, but loyalty matters to me.”

Grimes also mentioned that Lizzo showed kindness to her years ago, even before she became famous. “I’ve only seen exemplary behavior from her, especially when everyone was hating on me and she was successful,” Grimes wrote. “She had no reason to check in on me, except to be a good person. That’s just my opinion.”

Grimes concluded her post by expressing her excitement for Lizzo’s rise to fame in the music industry. “I find it hard to believe that she has changed so dramatically,” Grimes wrote. “I’m tired of a culture that seeks to destroy its greatest virtues. Lizzo is amazing.”

However, some fans continued to criticize Lizzo in the comments section, leading Grimes to reinforce her support for the singer.

“I see a society crumbling under the weight of human imperfection because people can’t handle the fact that we all make mistakes,” wrote Grimes. “I see humans becoming pathetic shadows of themselves, desperately seeking acceptance by turning against their own friends.”

In another post, Grimes addressed cancel culture, arguing that assuming guilt without due process is detrimental to public mental health.

“Since I’ve experienced it multiple times for things I didn’t do, I can’t accept it blindly anymore,” she wrote.

Lizzo’s representatives did not respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Insider’s Haven Orecchio-Egresitz reported that the lawsuit also accused Lizzo of holding a 12-hour rehearsal labeled a “re-audition” after expressing dissatisfaction with her dancers’ behavior, which she considered unprofessional.

Davis stated that she needed to use the bathroom during the audition but was too scared of being fired to take a break. The lawsuit mentioned that Davis eventually lost control of her bladder while on stage.

“Davis continued to perform on stage, dancing in soiled clothes until there was a brief segment where the dance cast was not part of the performance and allowed a short break,” the lawsuit stated.

On Thursday, Lizzo responded to the lawsuit by sharing a statement on her social media accounts. She called the allegations “outrageous” and “false.”

“I don’t want to be seen as a victim, but I also know that I am not the villain that people and the media have portrayed me to be in recent days,” the statement read.
