Greenpeace Activists Scale Roof of Rishi Sunak’s Yorkshire Family Home

A group of environmental activists has taken a creative and attention-grabbing approach to protest against Rishi Sunak’s plans for oil drilling expansion. Greenpeace UK successfully climbed onto the rooftop of the North Yorkshire mansion, valued at £2 million and registered as a Grade II listed building, and covered its facade with a large sheet of black cloth. The Prime Minister is currently vacationing in the US with his wife and two daughters.

While the police are managing the situation, the protesters anticipate staying on the roof of Sunak’s mansion in Kirby Sigston, his constituency, for at least an hour. In response, Conservative MPs have criticized the activists, labeling them as “spoiled” and accusing them of engaging in student union-level politics, which they argue jeopardizes the safety of elected representatives. Additionally, the former deputy chief constable of North Yorkshire Police criticized the force, highlighting what he perceives as a significant failure.

Forcing Sunak to Choose a Side

In a statement, Greenpeace UK explains the motivation behind their protest: “We are draping Rishi Sunak’s mansion with oil-black fabric to demonstrate our opposition to new oil initiatives. Despite Sunak’s announcement of plans to continue issuing new oil licenses and his imminent approval of the Rosebank project, the largest undeveloped oil field in the North Sea, we believe this will have devastating climate consequences and will not contribute to reducing bills. Therefore, we call for your support in thwarting these plans.”

The statement further highlights the power of public pressure, noting that governments have frequently reversed their decisions when faced with sufficient public outcry. The goal is to compel Rishi Sunak to make a choice: prioritize oil profits or prioritize our collective future.
