Research indicates that a growing number of Britain’s “white van men” are transitioning to electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids, aiming to reduce their carbon footprint and save on fuel costs. On average, van drivers believe they can save over £2,720 annually by switching from petrol and diesel.
Moreover, 55 percent of respondents anticipate driving an electric vehicle within the next two years. Six in ten van drivers also believe that adopting an electric vehicle could open up new business opportunities with socially conscious clientele.
A spokesperson for GRIDSERVE, the company that commissioned the survey, emphasized the significance of van drivers aligning with the electric vehicle trend: “Vans play a crucial role in the daily operations of the UK, facilitating package deliveries and transporting tradespeople to their next job. It is essential that this group recognizes the benefits of going green and embraces the technology.”
“These drivers are pivotal in driving the electric road revolution and will have a significant impact as more of them switch to cleaner vehicles. According to our calculations, transitioning the UK’s van fleet to electric could save 15 million tonnes of CO2 annually.”
The research findings also reveal that seven in ten van drivers are more inclined to consider environmentally friendly vans in contrast to five years ago. Furthermore, 82 percent of respondents expressed a desire to witness more companies adopting green vans in their fleets moving forward.
Notably, it is not solely companies that need to embrace a progressive outlook, as 59 percent of van drivers hope to retire the term “white van man” in favor of a more inclusive alternative.
Over the past five years, changes have been observed in the demographics of van drivers, with 55 percent noticing an increase in non-male drivers. Additionally, the survey conducted by OnePoll.com found that 42 percent have observed a rise in younger van drivers.
The GRIDSERVE spokesperson further commented on the survey results, stating, “For years, there have been a number of misguided opinions about van drivers held by the general public. However, this research demonstrates that many van drivers are defying stereotypes through their progressive attitudes towards inclusivity and the environment.”
