Greek residents wage battle against expensive sunbed rentals on beaches

Beaches in Greece are typically open to the public, but a growing issue has emerged with beachfront businesses monopolizing these spaces by setting up expensive sun-loungers, leaving many locals feeling excluded due to the high costs involved. In response, a movement known as the “Towel Movement” has taken shape, with protesters marching along Greek beaches to raise awareness about the issue. Signs held during these protests express discontent with the situation.

The movement originated on the island of Paros and has since spread to Naxos, with a Facebook group called “Save the Beaches of Naxos NOW!” now boasting over 5,000 members. While beaches are meant to be public spaces in Greece, businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and bars have the ability to lease portions of these areas to provide seating for their customers. However, some locals argue that these businesses are not only exceeding their allowed boundaries but also taking advantage of the situation by charging exorbitant prices.

The Save Paros Beaches group recently shared an image on Facebook that showcased an umbrella and two sunbeds available for rent at a rate of €60 per day. For those looking to enjoy the “VIP area” and soak up the sun, the cost was an astounding €120 per day. In a statement to Metro, the Save Paros Beaches group articulated their demand for the preservation of public space and the right to enjoy beaches that have been encroached upon by profit-driven businesses exceeding their legal limits.

One 70-year-old Paros resident named Nicolas Stephanou told The New York Times that locals “feel we’re being pushed off the island.” He pointed out significant discrepancies in the amount of beach space businesses should be occupying versus what they have claimed, with 18,800 square meters being taken up despite only 7,186 square meters being officially leased last year. Ronit Nesher, who made a permanent move to Paros a few years ago, expressed her disappointment with the situation, remarking that beaches that were once peaceful and open to all are now crowded with loungers and umbrellas, leaving no space to simply sit on the sand or enjoy nature.

The Independent has reached out to the Paros Municipality as well as the campaign groups in Paros and Naxos for their comments on the matter.
