A Republican vs. Democrat debate may be happening in America before the 2024 presidential election, but it won’t involve President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump. (Watch the video below.)
During an interview on Fox News, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposed a conservative-liberal showdown debate with California Governor Gavin Newsom, to be moderated by right-wing Fox News host Sean Hannity.
While this clash of ideologies has the potential for entertaining theater, neither politician currently holds significant national prominence. DeSantis trails front-runner Trump, who has been indicted three times, in the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Newsom, on the other hand, has not announced any plans to run for president as of yet, with his aspirations reportedly focusing more on 2028.
The New York Times wrote that both governors are “eager for as much attention as they can get,” indicating that this debate would essentially be a publicity stunt.
During his show, Hannity asked DeSantis about Newsom’s offer to debate, and DeSantis enthusiastically accepted. He stated, “I’m game. Let’s get it done. Just tell me when and where.”
In response, DeSantis wasted no time in firing back, pointing out the mass exodus from California and the surge in migration to Florida. He cautioned that Biden would likely welcome the “Californication” of the United States. DeSantis also suggested that Newsom could become a Democratic challenger to Biden, which he believed would accelerate America’s decline.
Newsom and DeSantis seem to have agreed on a date, with Nov. 8 or 10 mentioned.
However, Newsom’s spokesperson, Nathan Click, responded to DeSantis’ acceptance by saying, “DeSantis should put up or shut up.” (The New York Times)
DeSantis’ campaign has faced challenges as he engages in culture wars focused on being “anti-woke.” He has also downplayed slavery in Florida’s school curriculum and enacted anti-trans legislation, as well as restrictive abortion laws after six weeks.
Recently, Newsom called out GOP governors like Greg Abbott of Texas for their opposition to gun control, their support for book bans, and their targeting of doctors who perform abortions.
After exchanging barbs for months, Newsom proposed the debate in September, suggesting that DeSantis was too preoccupied with playing politics instead of focusing on the issues that affect people’s lives. Newsom tweeted, “Since you have only one overriding need ― attention ― let’s take this up & debate. I’ll bring my hair gel. You bring your hairspray. Name the time before Election Day.”
