Gordon Brown reveals reasons behind Scots’ disinterest in the Union

According to Mr. Brown, Scotland’s issue lies with a centralized system that is heavily focused on Whitehall and Westminster in London. This sentiment is shared by various regions across the UK, underscoring a disconnect from the central state.

The FocalData survey, conducted with 1,000 participants, was carried out prior to a rally in Edinburgh organized by the think tank. Scottish leaders will be joined by Mark Drakeford, the First Minister of Wales, Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, and Tracy Brabin, the Mayor of West Yorkshire, in their call to decentralize power across Britain.

The poll revealed that 59% of Scots feel a common bond with Geordies, compared to only 21% who do not. Similarly, 58% of Scottish respondents shared the same values as people from Newcastle, with just 19% expressing disagreement. The remaining 23% were undecided.

Strong affinity with the Welsh

The survey indicated that Scots also have a strong connection with the Welsh, with 57% feeling a common bond and 22% not feeling the same connection.

Furthermore, 46% of Scots claimed a common bond with Liverpudlians, while 28% disagreed. For Mancunians, the figures stood at 37% and 33% respectively.

Donald Cameron, the Scottish Tories’ shadow constitution secretary, pointed out that despite the SNP’s efforts to sow division and grievances, Scots feel a strong sense of affinity with people from other parts of the UK.

On the other hand, Keith Brown, the SNP’s depute leader, argued that Scotland is suffering from increasing control by Westminster. He claimed that independence would allow for a partnership of equals with the rest of the UK.
