GOP alleges that the White House conceals data on remote-working federal employees and urges staff to return to office premises

The Biden administration is facing criticism from Republicans over its alleged failure to provide accurate information on the number of federal employees working remotely. This comes as the White House plans to end its COVID-era remote work policy and require all employees to return to the office. In a letter from Chief of Staff Jeff Zients, it was stated that returning to in-person work is essential for the well-being of the teams and to deliver better results for the American people. However, House Republicans have expressed concerns about the lack of transparency regarding telework numbers and have accused the administration of intentionally withholding information from Congress. They have threatened to take “compulsory measures” if the requested information is not provided. The Republicans have been investigating the telework policy since May and are also seeking occupancy rates of federal offices in Washington, D.C. Additionally, they referenced D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s call for action to get federal workers back to the office or consider adjusting the government’s real estate footprint in the city. Reports indicate that only a third of federal employees have returned to the office since the pandemic began. Legislation has been introduced in both the House and Senate to restore pre-pandemic telework levels. The Biden administration, which ended the COVID-19 emergency in May, has prioritized ending the federal telework policy. In a hearing earlier this year, the Office of Personnel Management Director highlighted the positive impact that workplace flexibilities have had on productivity, engagement, and talent diversification. Republicans are now seeking information on management protocols for telework adherence and fulfillment of official duties.
