Google loses $120bn in value as Bard AI chatbot provides incorrect response

An exoplanet known as 2M1207b, which is approximately five times larger than Jupiter, has been discovered around 170 light-years away from Earth.

Concerns have arisen regarding the accuracy of artificial intelligence systems, as their errors often go unnoticed by humans. OpenAI, the developers of ChatGPT, a chatbot competitor, have been transparent about the limitations of their technology, acknowledging that it can occasionally provide plausible but incorrect or nonsensical answers to user queries.

Microsoft, the owner of OpenAI, has experienced a 6% increase in its share price over the past week, largely attributed to the launch of ChatGPT. Market analysts view this as a significant development and refer to the OpenAI investment and strategic partnership, estimated to be around $10 billion, as a game changer for Microsoft, led by their CEO, Satya Nadella.

John Kleeman, the founder of the online exam website Questionmark, expressed his admiration for AI’s potential to transform the world, stating, “As a technology, it is fantastically impressive, really showing us how AI is going to change the world,” during an interview with The Telegraph in December.

OpenAI has trained ChatGPT using various data sources, including the complete English-language content from Wikipedia, eight years’ worth of web pages from the public internet, and scans of English-language books. Similarly, Google has utilized comparable data sources to develop Bard, although the company has not revealed the specific training methods for generating its search result summaries and answers.

A spokesperson from Google emphasized the importance of a thorough testing process, which they are commencing this week with their Trusted Tester program. They will gather external feedback and incorporate it into their internal testing procedures to ensure that Bard’s responses meet high standards of quality, safety, and reliance on real-world information.
