Google Creates AI Tool ‘Genesis’ for Generating News Articles

Google announced on Thursday that it is working on an artificial intelligence tool called “Genesis” that will be able to write news articles and create headlines. The tech giant has approached major news organizations, including News Corp, to pitch the benefits of its AI tool. Despite this development, Google emphasized that its robots would not replace human editors and digital journalists currently working in the industry. A spokesperson from Google stated, “Our goal is to provide journalists with the option of using these emerging technologies to enhance their work and productivity, similar to the assistive tools we offer in Gmail and Google Docs.”

However, journalists have expressed skepticism towards this AI tool. Some executives who attended Google’s presentation found the plan unsettling and believed it overlooked the human effort required to produce accurate and well-crafted news stories. Google has given the working name “Genesis” to this tool, and executives from the New York Times and the Washington Post were approached as well. News Corp expressed its appreciation for Google’s commitment to journalism, while the New York Times and the Washington Post declined to comment.

The Google spokesperson clarified that the company is in the early stages of exploring ideas to provide AI-enabled tools for journalists. They emphasized that these tools are not designed to replace journalists’ essential role in reporting, creating, and fact-checking articles. Some outlets, such as BuzzFeed and CNET, have already started using AI in their coverage. However, Google’s development of AI tools for news content comes at a time of tension between media outlets and Big Tech firms. For example, Gannett, the publisher of USA Today, recently sued Google, accusing them of engaging in anti-competitive practices.

Separately, California state lawmakers have proposed a bill that would require tech firms to pay media outlets for using their news content. This bill is set for a final vote later this year. In response, Meta (formerly Facebook) warned that it could remove all news content from its platforms in California if the bill receives final approval.
