Earlier this year, Google found itself in a fierce competition with rivals like Microsoft and OpenAI to advance its A.I. technology. To invigorate its artificial intelligence research, Google made a strategic move in April: merging the acquired research lab, DeepMind, with its own artificial intelligence team, Brain.
Since the merger, the combined groups have been working on groundbreaking tools that have the potential to transform generative A.I. into a personalized life coach. Google DeepMind has been collaborating with generative A.I. to develop at least 21 different types of personal and professional applications. These tools range from providing life advice and generating ideas to offering planning instructions and tutoring tips.
This project exemplifies Google’s determination to lead in the A.I. field and its increasing willingness to entrust A.I. systems with sensitive tasks. It also reflects a shift in Google’s position on generative A.I. In December, the company’s A.I. safety experts cautioned against the risk of people forming emotional attachments to chatbots. However, Google was overshadowed by OpenAI’s release of ChatGPT in November, sparking a competition among tech giants and startups to establish dominance in this rapidly growing space.
Over the past nine months, Google has been striving to demonstrate its ability to keep up with OpenAI and Microsoft, launching Bard, enhancing its A.I. systems, and integrating the technology into various existing products, including its search engine and Gmail. To thoroughly test the capabilities of these tools, Google DeepMind has partnered with Scale AI, which has assembled a team of over 100 experts from diverse fields. These experts evaluate the responses generated by the A.I. assistant.
The ongoing evaluation involves testing the assistant’s proficiency in answering intimate questions about personal challenges. For instance, the team was presented with a hypothetical scenario in which a person struggles to attend a close friend’s wedding due to financial constraints. The project’s idea creation feature generates suggestions and recommendations based on specific situations. The tutoring function imparts new skills or enhances existing ones, such as improving running performance. Additionally, the planning capability assists in financial budgeting, meal planning, and workout regimes.
In December, Google’s A.I. safety experts expressed concerns about users experiencing a potential “diminished health and well-being” and a “loss of agency” if they were overly reliant on A.I. life advice. They also cautioned against users perceiving A.I. as sentient. While Bard, Google’s chatbot, refrains from providing medical, financial, or legal advice, it shares mental health resources with users experiencing distress. It should be noted that the tools being evaluated are still subject to review, and Google may opt not to implement them.
Regarding its foray into journalism, Google has been testing software named Genesis, designed to assist journalists in generating news articles, rewriting content, and suggesting headlines. The company has presented this software to executives at notable publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal’s parent company, News Corp.
Moreover, Google DeepMind has been exploring tools to expand the application of A.I. in the workplace. These tools encompass generating scientific, creative, and professional writing, as well as recognizing patterns and extracting data from text. Consequently, these capabilities hold potential for knowledge workers across different industries.
In the December presentation, Google’s A.I. safety experts raised concerns about the potential impact of generative A.I. on creative writers, fearing a “deskilling” effect. Additional tools being evaluated include the capacity to draft argument critiques, explain graphs, and create quizzes and puzzles involving words and numbers.
The prompt used to train the A.I. assistant illustrates its increasingly sophisticated capabilities: “Give me a summary of the article pasted below. I am particularly interested in what it says about capabilities humans possess, and that they believe A.I. cannot achieve.”
