Goodbye to Beloved ‘Doctors’ Soap Opera: BBC’s Iconic Series Comes to a Close After 23 Remarkable Years

Oct. 18 (UPI) — It is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of the beloved British soap opera, Doctors.

In a press release issued by the BBC on Wednesday, it was revealed that after 23 successful years, the final episode of the show will air in December 2024.

Explaining the decision, the network stated, “Due to the soaring costs of drama production and the need for significant investment to refurbish the show’s current location or find a new one, we have made the difficult choice to bring Doctors to an end. With limited funds, we must prioritize delivering greater value to our audiences.”

Rest assured, however, that the BBC remains dedicated to the West Midlands, and all the funds from Doctors will be reinvested into new programming in the region.”

Doctors made its debut in March 2000 and captivated audiences with its tales set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge. The show revolved around the lives and experiences of the dedicated staff at Mill Health Centre, as well as its sister hospitals, University of Letherbridge Campus Surgery and Sutton Vale Surgery.

The talented cast of Doctors includes Adrian Lewis Morgan, Elisabeth Dermot Walsh, Chris Walker, Dido Miles, Ian Midlane, Ashley Rice, Bharti Patel, Dex Lee, Ross McLaren, Kia Pegg, Kiruna Stamell, Wendi Peters, and Rahul Arya.

“We express our deepest gratitude to everyone who has been a part of Doctors since its inception in 2000. We recognize the vital role the show has played in nurturing talent, and we are committed to creating new opportunities to support skills development in scripted programming,” the BBC expressed.

The final episode of Doctors will air in December 2024, and BBC Studios is working closely with us to ensure that it receives the grand farewell it deserves.”
