GMC Acadia 2024: Embracing Bigger & Better | Prepare for the Ultimate Experience

In 2006, the market for large 3-row crossover utility vehicles based on car-derived platforms was still developing. However, GM introduced the GMC Acadia and Buick Envoy on its Lambda platform, offering the same interior space as full-size SUVs at the time. After downsizing the second generation, the 2024 Acadia is returning to its full-size, midsize template.

The third generation Acadia is expected to have similar dimensions to the 2024 Traverse, with an estimated length of 206 inches and a 121-inch wheelbase. This means that the third row of the 2024 Acadia will once again comfortably accommodate two adults, a feature lacking in the outgoing model.

The exterior of the new Acadia boasts a sturdy, SUV-like appearance with refined details that give it an upscale look compared to its Chevrolet counterpart. The side window framing now extends from the C-pillar to the D-pillar, creating a larger expanse of glass.

The front fascia of the Acadia has been redesigned with taller dimensions and distinctive hooked headlights reminiscent of the Sierra pickup. The use of LED lighting adds a modern touch to the overall design.

The interior of the new Acadia showcases significant changes compared to the previous generation and differs from the Traverse. It features a 15-inch portrait style infotainment screen, similar to the Sierra EV, with a conveniently placed volume knob. Unlike Ford, GMC retains physical switches for frequently used functions, offering a more user-friendly experience. The Acadia also includes the Android Automotive-based infotainment system with built-in Google Automotive Services and smartphone projection compatibility.

The Acadia Denali trim will offer GM’s Super Cruise driving assistant, which is known for its reliable performance. This system includes speed and lane centering control, lane changing automation, and support for towing on hundreds of thousands of miles of roads throughout North America.

The second-row seats of the Acadia feature a useful folding and tipping mechanism, allowing easy access to the third row or convenient storage of a child seat.

Underneath the body, the new Acadia retains its tried-and-true architecture. It features a front strut suspension and a rear multi-link independent setup. The engine is mounted transversely in the front, and both front and all-wheel drive options are available.

GM has simplified the powertrain lineup, offering only one engine option: a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 315 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, this engine outperforms the previous V6 and 2.0-liter turbo options. The Acadia can tow up to 5,000 lbs.

The initial trim levels will include the luxury Denali and Denali Ultimate, as well as the off-road focused AT4 trim. With increased ground clearance and specialized tires, the AT4 trim is capable of handling basic trails and adverse weather conditions. However, for more intense off-road adventures, GMC may consider developing an AT4X variant similar to the Canyon AT4X, although no official announcements have been made yet.

Pricing details for the 2024 Acadia will be announced closer to its release date in early 2024. The production of the new Acadia will take place in Lansing, Mich.
