Gleyber Torres, Yankees’ Second Baseman, Facing Challenges with Hitting into Double Plays

ATLANTA — Gleyber Torres is experiencing a significant decline in his performance. Despite being one of the Yankees’ most reliable hitters this season, Torres grounded into two double plays in a 5-0 loss to the Braves on Tuesday night, extending a troubling streak. Over his last six games, he has hit into six double plays, the most by any Yankee in a six-game span in franchise history, according to Stathead. This trend has negatively impacted the team’s offense during a challenging period.

Manager Aaron Boone acknowledged Torres’ recent struggle, stating, “He’s been putting it on the ground a bit more during his short slump. He’s usually very good at avoiding that kind of situation.” In his first 113 games of the season, Torres grounded into 11 double plays. However, his recent six-game stretch has brought his total to 17 for the season, tying him for the fourth-most in the majors. On Tuesday, both of Torres’ double plays occurred after Aaron Judge had walked to lead off an inning. Overall, the Yankees hit 12 ground ball outs against Braves right-hander Bryce Elder out of their total 21 outs.

Harrison Bader was caught off guard and picked off first base in the sixth inning of Monday’s game, which the Yankees were trailing 8-2. However, Boone defended his decision not to bench Bader for this baserunning mistake. Boone explained, “I saw that Bader was completely invested, focused, and competing. It was a bad mistake, but it didn’t change my perception of his commitment to the game.”

Looking ahead to the series finale against the Braves, the Yankees are considering starting Michael King, whom they successfully avoided using out of the bullpen on Tuesday. King threw two innings and 41 pitches as an opener on Saturday as part of the team’s plan to increase his workload. While Boone did not officially announce a starter, Randy Vasquez is expected to pitch the majority of the innings. The Yankees had the opportunity to rearrange their rotation with a day off on Thursday before heading into a series against the Red Sox. However, it seems they have chosen to maintain their rotation order, with Jhony Brito scheduled to pitch on Friday (possibly following an opener) and Gerrit Cole set to start on Saturday.
