However, GlaxoSmithKline, one of the largest drug firms in Britain, believes that cutting-edge AI has the potential to revolutionize the development of new medicines, leading to significant advancements in the healthcare sector.

GlaxoSmithKline has already started utilizing AI, leveraging technologies like ChatGPT, to personalize medical treatments for individual patients. This customization enhances the effectiveness of drugs in treating various conditions.

In addition, with the help of AI hubs located around the world, including a major hub near King’s Cross station in London, GlaxoSmithKline’s scientists are accelerating the pace of clinical trials using AI-powered data analysis.

Traditionally, clinical trials involve lengthy processes where researchers sift through enormous amounts of anonymous medical data to identify suitable patients for new treatments. However, by employing AI, GlaxoSmithKline has been able to analyze vast quantities of data, making certain parts of the clinical trial process up to five times faster.

For instance, in the case of developing a drug for chronic hepatitis B, GSK utilized AI to categorize patients into five different groups based on data from a previous trial. This approach significantly increased the chances of success by up to seven times.

AI is also being employed in GSK’s laboratories to expedite disease analysis. These advancements allow GSK’s scientists to assess hundreds of potential causes for a disease in the time it previously took to assess just one.

Kim Branson, GSK’s head of AI, expressed, ‘AI is a game-changer for drug discovery. Our research teams can now investigate hundreds of potential drug targets simultaneously, a significant improvement from the traditional one-by-one approach.’

GSK is not the only UK firm integrating AI into the pharmaceutical industry. Poolbeg Pharma, an AIM-listed company based in London, is also leveraging AI to analyze flu patient data with the aim of developing treatments to alleviate symptoms.

Jeremy Skillington, CEO of Poolbeg Pharma, stated, ‘Biotech companies are increasingly collaborating with technology companies to merge biology, chemistry, and technology. AI has become a crucial tool for understanding biology using supercomputers.’

He further added, ‘Once the industry realizes that AI saves time, cuts costs, and improves risk ratios, pharmaceutical companies will fully embrace it, as they are constantly in search of new drugs, targets, and medicines.’

The integration of AI in the pharmaceutical industry is expected to boost the UK economy as the country positions itself as a leading player in life sciences and a global AI hub.

Moreover, it offers a promising opportunity for the UK to revive its status as a center for clinical trials and drug development, which garnered international acclaim during the development of COVID-19 vaccines.
