Gillian Keegan makes a passionate appeal for an end to the “terrible” and “heart-wrenching” junior doctor strikes

The Education Secretary, Gillian Keegan, is urging junior doctors to cease their ongoing strikes, describing them as “awful” and “heartbreaking”. This call comes following the government’s announcement of a proposed £1,000 salary increase, on top of a six per cent raise, for junior doctors. The British Medical Association (BMA), however, has dismissed the proposal, deeming it not “credible”.

During an interview with Sky News, Ms. Keegan expressed her concern over the “massive backlog” in the NHS, attributing it to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. She emphasized the difficult decisions that had to be made, with resources being prioritized for tackling the global health crisis. However, she acknowledged the frustration felt by individuals who had already experienced delays and cancellations in their planned operations and treatments.

Ms. Keegan appealed to the striking junior doctors to return to work and accept the independent pay review body’s recommendations. She highlighted the pain and suffering of many patients, underscoring the urgency of the situation.

In addition, Ms. Keegan commended the decision made by four education unions to cancel their planned strikes in support of her proposed 6.5 per cent pay increase for teachers this year.
