Prepare to be entertained, Williamsburg! The Second City, the renowned comedic company from Chicago, has made its way to the boroughs of New York City. After announcing their plans to open a location in NYC last October, The Second City New York is now selling tickets online, less than a year later.
“For over sixty years, we have been nurturing and developing talent on our stages in Chicago and Toronto, with many of our performers coming from New York. While we have toured the city regularly since the 1960s, we have never had a permanent home,” said Ed Wells, CEO of The Second City. “This is a time when there is a growing demand for exceptional live comedy, and we are thrilled to be at the forefront in New York City.”
The decision to establish a branch in Brooklyn comes after 63 years in Chicago and 50 years in Toronto, with previous branches in Detroit and Las Vegas that have since closed. The Second City, a comedic institution over 60 years old, will officially open its NYC venue on November 16th.
“As we emerged from the pandemic and witnessed the resurgence of our stages and the high demand from our audience, it became apparent to us that expansion was necessary,” Wells explained last year. “New York seemed like the obvious choice.”
Located at 64 N. Ninth St., The Second City’s complex spans nearly 12,000 square feet. Fans can secure their entry to the venue’s opening shows, such as “The First City Revue,” a hilarious tribute to NYC through improv and sketch comedy; “Jack Frost Roasting On an Open Fire,” an interactive and comedic holiday revue; and “Improv Holiday Brunch,” a seasonal comedic experience accompanied by delicious food options and mimosas.
The Second City, known for launching the careers of comedy icons like Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Keegan-Michael Key, will also feature a restaurant and training center in their new space. The complex includes a fully-stocked bar and restaurant, two cabaret-style live theaters, and seven classrooms. Enrollment for select classes at the training center is now available online.
