Sept. 19 (UPI) — The government of Germany has taken a decisive step in combating right-wing extremism by banning the Hammerskin neo-Nazi group and carrying out raids against its members.
The German Interior Ministry revealed that over 700 police officers conducted raids on the homes of 28 individuals associated with the organization across 10 federal German states. These operations resulted in the seizure of cash, weapons, Hammerskins-branded clothing, swastika flags, and copies of Mein Kampf.
“This ban is a significant blow against organized right-wing extremism. By outlawing the ‘Hammerskins Germany’, we are putting an end to the deplorable activities of an internationally recognized active neo-Nazi association,” stated Nancy Faeser, the German Federal Minister of the Interior.
The Hammerskin movement originated in Texas during the late 1980s as part of a neo-confederate movement and has since spread to various countries, including Britain, Australia, and Germany.
Notorious for their promotion of Nazi ideology through concerts and the establishment of neo-Nazi music labels, the Hammerskins have also been involved in the sale of anti-Semitic records.
In Germany, the Hammerskin movement is closely associated with the neo-Nazi music scene and has been linked to a controversial music venue known as ‘Hate Bar’, which has faced legal consequences for displaying banned symbols.
According to the German Interior Ministry, this ban marks the 20th prohibition imposed on a right-wing organization. The operation was carried out in close cooperation with counterparts in the United States.
“Right-wing extremism continues to pose the most significant threat to our democracy. We will continue to take decisive action in dismantling these extremist structures,” affirmed Minister Faeser.
