Georgia District Attorney Requests Judge To Commence Trump Trial During Super Tuesday Week

Georgia prosecutors are proposing to start the trial of former President Donald Trump and his associates for alleged crimes related to the 2020 election during the same week that 16 states hold their presidential primaries. This move would further add chaos to an already busy day on the primary calendar.

The district attorney of Fulton County, Georgia, is requesting a court to schedule Trump’s trial on racketeering and other charges, which stem from his attempts to overturn the election, to begin on March 4, 2024, just before Super Tuesday. However, Trump’s lawyers are expected to delay the proceedings or attempt to move the trial to federal court, where they believe they may have a more favorable jury.

If the trial proceeds as planned, it would create an unprecedented televised split screen, with Trump simultaneously running for the Republican presidential nomination and facing multiple legal cases that have, so far, not affected his support among the GOP base.

It is worth noting that the proposed trial date does not conflict with Trump’s other ongoing legal cases in Florida, New York, and Washington, D.C.

Furthermore, it is a peculiar scenario for Trump to potentially face a criminal trial against charges of trying to prevent Joe Biden from lawfully assuming office while already securing the Republican nomination. If Trump wins the early-voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada, his victory in other states would be highly likely, especially if many of his opponents have dropped out and rallied around him.

Moreover, if the trial commences during Super Tuesday week, Trump may find himself simultaneously fighting his legal case while Georgians are casting their votes in the presidential primary the following week.

The request made by the Fulton County district attorney is to arraign Trump during the week of September 5, but the judge’s approval is needed for the proposed dates to become official.

Trump and his political allies argue that these legal cases, including the one in Georgia, are an exploitation of the justice system. Trump will address these matters in a press conference scheduled for Monday.

Interestingly, Trump’s legal troubles do not seem to dampen support among GOP supporters. A recent Quinnipiac University poll conducted between August 10 and 14 revealed that Trump has widened his lead over Florida Governor Ron DeSantis among likely Republican primary voters. The same poll also indicated that 85% of Republicans do not believe Trump should be prosecuted for attempting to undermine the election results to retain his position.

Overall, if the trial proceeds as proposed, it will undoubtedly create a highly unconventional and attention-grabbing situation, potentially influencing the dynamics of both the primary races and Trump’s legal battles.
