Georgia Case Hearing Witnesses Testify with Mark Meadows as Key Witness

Mark Meadows appeared in a hearing in Atlanta regarding the Georgia indictment accusing him, along with former President Donald Trump and others, of participating in an illegal scheme to overturn the 2020 election. The hearing questioned whether Meadows should be able to fight the indictment in federal court instead of state court. Meadows was questioned by his lawyers and prosecutors, with cross-examination ongoing.

Meadows’ attorney asked him about his duties as Trump’s chief of staff and went over the specific acts mentioned in the indictment. Meadows stated that for most of the listed acts, he had performed them as part of his official duty. The Fulton County District Attorney alleges that Meadows and others were involved in a conspiracy to unlawfully keep Trump in power.

Meadows’ defense argues that the actions he took were within the scope of his duties as chief of staff and that the charges against him should be dismissed. They want the case to be moved to federal court to stop any proceedings at the state level. Meadows denied two specific acts mentioned in the indictment and stated that they did not occur.

The prosecution argues that the actions in question were solely meant to keep Trump in office and were illegal under the Hatch Act. They believe the case should remain in Fulton County Superior Court. The allegations against Meadows include participating in meetings or communications with state lawmakers, traveling to Atlanta’s suburbs where a signature audit was taking place, arranging a phone call between Trump and a Georgia investigator, and participating in a phone call between Trump and Georgia’s Secretary of State.

The defense believes that Meadows’ actions were part of his official duties as chief of staff and that he is not entitled to immunity under the Supremacy Clause. They argue that the merits of his immunity arguments should not be considered when deciding whether to move the case to federal court. Other individuals charged in the indictment are also seeking to move the case to federal court.

The hearing also saw subpoenas issued to witnesses, including Georgia’s Secretary of State and former Meadows assistant Cassidy Hutchinson. The defense maintains that the Hatch Act is not relevant at this stage and should be discussed after the case is moved to federal court.
