George Santos seeks reversal of court order in criminal case.

On Friday, Rep. George Santos, a freshman congressmen charged with financial crimes, asked a federal court to reverse a decision requiring the disclosure of the identities of those who guaranteed his $500,000 bond. According to Santos’ attorney, the suretors’ identities should remain private due to potential harassment and attacks in response to media scrutiny. The attorney argued that the court failed to appreciate the gravity of the privacy concerns for the suretors, particularly given the current political climate. U.S. Magistrate Judge Anne Shields had previously ruled that the public has a right to know the guarantors’ identities, arguing that the large bail amount backed by the unidentified individuals presented an opportunity for political influence. Lawyers for the New York Times echoed these concerns, contending that Santos’ criminal charges involve political abuse for personal gain. Nonetheless, Santos hopes to keep the identities of his bond guarantors concealed to prevent further harm.
