George Harrison’s Mother Was Slightly Irritated by His Fans

George Harrison’s mother, Louise Harrison, expressed her disdain for certain fans of the Beatles in a letter that will be auctioned later this month at the Liverpool Beatles Memorabilia Auction. The letter, dated November 23, 1963, was one of many that Louise wrote to Janet Gray, a teenager who assisted the Beatles in answering fan mail from around the world. According to the BBC, this particular letter suggests Louise’s frustration with the “so called fans” who screamed throughout the Beatles’ performances, causing her to feel ashamed as a female.

Louise Harrison’s collection of letters to Janet Gray from 1963 to 1966 will be auctioned as well. The Guardian describes these letters as “touchingly intimate and encouraging,” containing maternal advice and expressing concern for her son, George Harrison. In one letter, she updates Gray on George’s well-being after surviving a car crash in Surrey. The letter addressing her frustration with Beatles fans is expected to fetch between $125 and $190 at the auction on Aug. 26. For more Beatles memorabilia available, visit the auction page here.
