Even the Chevrolet Bolt, initially scheduled for discontinuation, will receive an updated version with this functionality due to consumer demand for affordable electric vehicles.

With the increasing frequency and duration of blackouts caused by extreme weather resulting from climate change, the ability of vehicles to provide electricity to homes and sustain essential appliances such as refrigerators and lights becomes highly appealing. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the average duration of power outages has doubled from 2015 to 2021.

Carmakers are now emphasizing the practical advantages of electric vehicles as they target consumers who may not prioritize environmental concerns or hesitate to adopt new technology. GM’s Vice President responsible for vehicle-to-home products, Hossein Hassani, highlighted the company’s ability to provide mobility as well as backup power to homes.

This move by GM to integrate backup power technology also marks a notable competition with Tesla, known for its Powerwall batteries that store solar energy for home backup power. While Tesla vehicles are not currently designed for home power supply, the company has indicated potential plans to incorporate the feature in the future.

While some electric vehicles on the market, like the Ford F-150 Lightning pickup, already offer home power supply capabilities, most electric cars do not possess this technology. However, GM seeks to change that, ensuring that all their vehicles can provide power to homes.

Customers interested in utilizing this feature will need to invest in additional hardware to connect their vehicles to household electrical systems; nevertheless, the cost is expected to be lower than that of generators or separate batteries. For comparison, Tesla’s Powerwalls currently retail at $8,700 before federal tax credits.

Moreover, electric vehicles represent a potential solution for utilities to store excess solar or renewable energy. In exchange for payment or bill discounts, owners could allow utilities to utilize their vehicles as storage reservoirs, absorbing renewable energy during surplus periods and releasing it when the grid requires additional power.

With concerns raised about the readiness of the grid for the influx of electric vehicles, GM’s Hassani suggests a different perspective, asking how these vehicles can support the grid rather than questioning if the grid is ready for them.
