Gender Discrimination Suit Results in LAPD Officers Winning $13.1 Million

Two male Los Angeles police officers have been awarded a collective sum of $13.1 million in their lawsuit, alleging gender discrimination and retaliation. The officers, Stephen Glick and Alfred Garcia, claimed that they were treated differently by LAPD management compared to their female partners during the arrest of a drunk driving suspect in 2017.

Last week, the Los Angeles Superior Court jury reached a verdict in favor of Glick and Garcia.

The lawsuit stemmed from a complaint made by the suspect in February 2017, alleging that while in custody, his eyebrows were shaved off and his body was marked with a pen by the officers. In April 2017, search warrants were served on the two male officers, but not on their female partners who were also present at the scene, as mentioned in the lawsuit. Glick filed a discrimination complaint, after which both he and Garcia were ordered to a Board of Rights hearing for potential termination due to alleged battery of the suspect. However, their female partners faced no similar threats or punishment, according to the lawsuit.

Although the LAPD did not conduct a Board of Rights hearing for the plaintiffs, the stigma associated with the accusations effectively damaged their reputations and hindered Glick’s chances of promotion into the LAPD’s elite Metro Division. The lawsuit further states that both officers suffered economic losses and emotional distress.

In response, the City Attorney’s Office contended in court papers that while there was insufficient evidence to punish the male officers, they were deemed the most likely individuals involved in the assault for various reasons.

Glick, who has served the LAPD for over two decades and has received two life-saving medals for bravery, was one of the plaintiffs. Garcia, on the other hand, has had multiple tours in LAPD gang units.
