Gavin Newsom Has Quietly Launched His 2024 Presidential Campaign, Yet to Announce Officially

Gavin Newsom is currently vying for the position of President, although he has not officially declared his candidacy yet. Recent events have shown that he is making moves in that direction. This week, Kamala Harris and Jill Biden took on more responsibilities as President Biden underwent root canal work. Speculation suggests that the President chose to have the procedure done during Vice President Harris’ scheduled speech. In the midst of all this, California’s Governor Newsom has been making his own moves. Alongside announcing a new gun law, he was also interviewed by Sean Hannity on Fox News. It is unlikely that a Democratic governor would subject themselves to such a platform unless they had their sights set on a higher position. And that turned out to be the case. Newsom took advantage of the opportunity to highlight his achievements in California, which were widely circulated on social media. He claimed that California has surpassed the nation economically, citing statistics such as being number one in new business start-ups, access to venture capital funding, and tourism spending. However, Newsom’s portrayal of the situation was not entirely accurate. While California does have more business openings than other states, this can be attributed to its larger population, which is nearly double that of Florida. When accounting for population size, California actually performed worse in terms of new business growth. Additionally, Newsom’s claim that California leads in tourism spending is misleading. Figures from 2021 show that California was the most visited US state, with $102 billion in tourism spending, only slightly higher than Florida’s $101.9 billion. Considering the population difference, Newsom’s claim loses its impact. Despite Newsom’s boasts, there are significant issues in his state that he fails to address. For instance, California has a disproportionately high homeless population, accounting for 30% of the nation’s homeless, despite only making up 11% of the US population. During Newsom’s tenure, California has also seen a significant outflow of residents, while states like Florida and Texas have experienced an influx of new residents. Moreover, California faces challenges in its electrical grid, with high household electricity prices and the threat of rolling blackouts. Newsom’s approach to state finances is also concerning, as California currently has a $32 billion budget deficit, while Texas and Florida have budget surpluses. In terms of education, California falls behind, with low proficiency rates among students in math and English Language Arts. In comparison, Texas and Florida perform significantly better. Despite Newsom’s desire to debate Ron DeSantis, his track record shows a state with deteriorating conditions, from infrastructure to education. As for New York, the increasing presence of delivery bikes poses a threat to pedestrians. The silent and unpredictable nature of these cyclists makes walking in the city a dangerous task. While such encounters used to elicit frustration, they have become a common occurrence that people simply accept.
