Workers Uncover Ancient Mummies and Artifacts in Lima, Peru
Last week, while installing new gas lines in Lima, Peru, workers made a remarkable discovery. Hidden beneath the city’s surface, they uncovered eight mummies and various objects dating back to pre-Inca times. This find sheds light on the rich history of the capital region, which has many layers waiting to be unveiled.
The gas line workers, employed by the company Calidda, stumbled upon these pre-Inca funeral bales. Lead archaeologist Jesus Bahamonde, who has been overseeing excavations during the company’s infrastructure projects for the past 19 years, expressed his excitement. “We are recovering those leaves of the lost history of Lima that is just hidden under the tracks and streets,” he said.
Throughout their excavations, Calidda has unearthed over 1,900 archaeological finds, including textiles, pottery, and mummies. Most of these discoveries have been connected to burial sites on flat ground. Additionally, more than 400 larger archaeological sites have been uncovered in Lima, demonstrating the significance of this area throughout various historical periods.
The ancient indigenous Quechua language refers to adobe constructions on hills as “huacas,” considering them sacred places. This region has been inhabited by pre-Inca cultures, the Inca Empire, and the culture introduced by Spanish conquistadors. Therefore, finding such artifacts is not surprising.
The recent discovery includes bales containing the remains of ancient individuals in a seated position. These bundles were wrapped in cotton cloth and tied with braided ropes made of liana. The Calidda archaeologists believe that these bales are from the Ichma culture, a pre-Inca civilization that existed from 1100 A.D. until its assimilation into the Inca Empire in the 15th century.
Within the burial sites, Calidda archaeologists found artifacts near braised chicken restaurants and a road leading to the country’s sole nuclear power station. Interestingly, the discoveries made over the years have not just been from ancient times. In 2018, archaeologists stumbled upon wooden coffins containing three Chinese immigrants who were buried in the 19th century. These coffins were accompanied by opium-smoking pipes, handmade cigarettes, shoes, Chinese playing cards, a Peruvian silver coin dated 1898, and a certificate of completion from 1875.
As Bahamonde explains, the history of Lima is a historical continuation, with various populations occupying the area for centuries. The recent findings add another layer to the city’s captivating past.
