NEW DELHI (AP) — The African Union has been given permanent member status in the Group of 20 top world economies, according to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This move adds momentum to Modi’s efforts to give a greater voice to the Global South as host of this year’s annual summit.
The announcement was made during Modi’s opening speech at the G20 summit where he emphasized the importance of finding solutions to global challenges such as economic disparities and issues related to terrorism, cyber security, health, and water security.
Modi made it a priority to include the African Union in the G20 to showcase his commitment to the Global South. The move was met with widespread support among the leaders in attendance.
The G20 summit, held in New Delhi, aimed to address critical issues facing developing nations, including the development of alternative fuels, resource efficiency, food security, and the establishment of a common framework for digital public infrastructure.
Reforming development banks like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to make funds more accessible to lower- and middle-income countries, especially in their efforts to combat climate change, was also on the agenda.
Human Rights Watch urged G20 leaders not to let international disunity overshadow discussions at the summit and called on them to address issues such as gender discrimination and racism.
The summit took place amidst ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with Russian President Vladimir Putin refusing to restore a landmark deal that allowed Ukraine to export grain safely through the Black Sea. Other leaders expressed their concerns about Russia’s military aggression and its impact on global food security.
Despite these challenges, there was an optimistic atmosphere at the summit, with leaders expressing a desire to find solutions. Modi met with U.S. President Joe Biden before the formal start of the meeting, and discussions were held on a joint infrastructure project between India, the U.S., Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
