WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden’s plans to visit Jordan as part of his Middle East trip have been altered, following the abrupt cancelation of a leaders summit on humanitarian aid for Palestinians on Tuesday. This decision was made amidst escalating unrest in the region, triggered by a devastating bombing at a hospital in Gaza.

Prior to the cancelation, Biden was scheduled to meet with Jordan’s King Abdullah, Egyptian president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmound Abbas, after his initial visit to Israel.

“In light of the ongoing conflict, our priority now is to focus on putting an end to the war,” stated Ayman Safadi, Jordanian foreign minister, in a televised address.

The bombing of Gaza’s al-Ahli Hospital resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives and further exacerbated the conflict between Israel and Hamas. The White House expressed its condolences for the victims of the hospital explosion in Gaza and extended well wishes for the swift recovery of the injured.

Considering the mourning period announced by President Abbas for the hospital attack victims, the White House ultimately decided not to proceed with the trip to Jordan.

Disturbing video footage captured the aftermath of the bombing, which Hamas militants attributed to airstrikes by Israel. However, Israel denied responsibility, asserting that the hospital was not one of their targets.

Furious protesters gathered in capitals worldwide, demanding an immediate end to the Israeli military operation.

Israel’s aerial bombardment campaign in Gaza, described as a total siege, has resulted in severe deprivation for the two million inhabitants, including water, food, and electricity shortages.

The worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza was intended to be a key focus of Biden’s trip, as evidenced by the now canceled summit.

The United States has been working alongside Egypt and Israel to establish humanitarian corridors aimed at facilitating the evacuation of women and children from the most severely affected areas.

“I am confident that the innocent people in Gaza will have access to medicine, food, and water,” Biden expressed during an interview on “60 Minutes.”
