The Orange County Board of Supervisors has taken a significant step towards addressing the issue of fentanyl abuse by approving funding for a range of innovative approaches.
Chairman Don Wagner, from the Orange County Board, has allocated $1.7 million from his district’s discretionary funds to support the addition of a sheriff’s deputy to participate in the department’s “Above the Influence” substance abuse prevention program. This comprehensive program is designed to educate fifth- and sixth-graders about the dangers of substance abuse, including fentanyl.
Currently, the program has one sergeant and two deputies assigned. The addition of a third deputy will cost the county $265,000, and Chairman Wagner aims to secure funding for this position for the next five years.
In addition, the funding will support the acquisition of a new vehicle dedicated to combating the transportation of illegal goods and drugs. It will also provide essential tools for investigators and a new drug-sniffing dog.
Sheriff Don Barnes emphasized the importance of education and prevention in safeguarding children from substance experimentation and substance use disorders. He expressed gratitude for Chairman Wagner’s funding, which will enable the expansion of this vital program and reach more students effectively.
