The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a motion on Friday that allocates funds to address water seepage and roadway damage on Temescal Canyon Road. The road was significantly impacted by heavy winter storms earlier this year.
In a 13-0 vote, the council agreed to allocate $800,000 to address the existing problems and strengthen Temescal Canyon Road, located in Pacific Palisades within Council District 11. Council members Monica Rodriguez and Hugo Soto-Martínez were absent during the vote.
Temescal Canyon Road is a vital north/south thoroughfare that connects Sunset Boulevard to Pacific Coast Highway. The motion states that due to the heavy storms, the southbound lane between PCH and West Bowdoin Street is currently facing “structural instability.”
The motion directs the city administrative office to identify funding so that the Bureau of Engineering can repair the road and implement a mitigation plan for Temescal Canyon Road.
Miriam Zar, a resident of Pacific Palisades and a constituent of CD 11, expressed gratitude towards Councilwoman Traci Park for introducing the motion. Park represents CD 11, which includes the neighborhoods of Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, Del Rey, Ladera, Mar Vista, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista, Venice, West L.A./Sawtelle, and Westchester.
“Temescal Canyon Road is one of only two, possibly three, roadways that allow us to enter and exit Pacific Palisades,” Zar stated. “Not only is it a major route for our daily commutes, but it also serves as an evacuation route.”
She emphasized the fact that one entire lane is currently blocked and expressed hope that with the assistance of the city, it will be reopened soon.
