Fulton County Judge denies Mark Meadows’ appeal for delay in surrender and arrest

In a court order issued on Wednesday, a federal judge in Georgia rejected former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows’ request to delay his surrender and arrest in Fulton County. Meadows’ attorneys were seeking to move the case to federal court, but Judge Steve Jones ruled that there is no basis for an injunction or temporary stay prohibiting District Attorney Fani Willis from enforcing the arrest warrant. Jones stated that the law does not allow for federal court interference in the state case, and thus the prosecution of Meadows must continue while the broader request to transfer the case is considered. Meadows argued that his case should be moved to federal court because the allegations against him occurred while he was acting as White House chief of staff. However, Willis pushed back, emphasizing that the arrest does not impact the defendant’s ability to seek removal or the federal court’s jurisdiction. Meadows’ legal team also fought to delay the deadline for surrendering and being arrested. Similarly, another Trump ally, Jeffrey Clark, attempted to postpone his arrest but was also denied by Judge Jones. A federal court hearing on the transfer of the Meadows case is scheduled for August 28.
