Fulton County District Attorney subpoenas Raffensperger and ex-investigator for testimony in Meadows’ attempt to relocate the case.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has issued subpoenas to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and former chief investigator Frances Watson, compelling them to testify at a hearing on Monday regarding Mark Meadows’ effort to transfer his prosecution related to an alleged attempt to reverse the outcome of Georgia’s 2020 election to federal court. The subpoenas were revealed in filings with the federal district court in Atlanta. Raffensperger’s office declined to comment.

The hearing, ordered by U.S. District Judge Steve Jones, will focus on Meadows’ attempt to move his criminal case from Fulton County Superior Court to federal district court. Meadows is one of the 19 defendants charged in the state racketeering case brought by Willis over an alleged scheme to overturn Trump’s electoral loss in Georgia. He is facing charges for violating Georgia’s racketeering law and soliciting a Georgia public officer to violate his oath of office. Meadows has agreed to a $100,000 bond and was booked at the Fulton County jail on Thursday.

Meadows argues that his case should be heard in federal court because the conduct detailed in the indictment relates to his work as a White House employee, and his status as a federal officer protects him from being tried in state court. However, Meadows’ request to postpone his surrender to Fulton County law enforcement was rejected by Judge Jones, who stated that federal law does not allow for interference by a federal court at this stage of the case.

Willis strongly opposes Meadows’ attempt to move the case to federal court, calling it baseless and against the law’s requirements. The indictment against Meadows states that he participated in a call between Donald Trump and Brad Raffensperger on January 2, 2021, during which Trump urged Raffensperger to “find” enough votes to overturn Biden’s win in Georgia. Meadows also allegedly tried to observe a signature match audit in Cobb County, Georgia, in December 2020, and communicated with Frances Watson about expediting the verification process.

According to Meadows’ lawyers, the actions outlined in the charges against him were within his duties as the Chief of Staff. The upcoming hearing will shed more light on the case and determine whether it will remain in state court or be transferred to federal court.
