Washington — Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis issued a sharply worded response to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio on Thursday, accusing him of obstructing the prosecution of the racketeering case against former President Donald Trump.
In a letter obtained by CBS News, Willis responded to Jordan’s inquiry into whether she coordinated with federal officials when indicting Trump and 18 other defendants for their alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia. She argued that Congress lacks jurisdiction over the state’s criminal case.
Willis stated that Jordan’s request for information was an “unjustified and illegal intrusion” into an ongoing state criminal prosecution. She emphasized that the defendants have been charged under state law and that Congress has no authority to supervise the investigation and prosecution of a Georgia criminal case.
“Your attempt to invoke congressional authority to interfere with an active criminal case in Georgia is flagrantly unconstitutional,” Willis wrote. She dismissed Jordan’s allegations that the case against Trump was politically motivated, stating that they are unfounded.
Willis also refused to be bullied or threatened by members of Congress or others. She reminded Jordan to deal with the realities of the situation and listed several of those realities, including the fact that committing felonies in Fulton County, Georgia will result in felony charges.
Jordan also inquired about the use of federal funds by the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. Willis assured him that the office has used federal grant funding appropriately and warned against defunding her office as vengeful and harmful to the citizens of Fulton County.
She went on to share racist and violent threats that she and her staff have received as a result of the investigation, urging the panel to consider directing the Justice Department to investigate these threats.
