Fugees Rapper Accuses Lawyer’s AI Assistance for Conviction: The Surprising Culprit Behind Legal Troubles

Prakazrel “Pras” Michel is seeking to have his corruption conviction overturned, citing various reasons, including the alleged use of artificial intelligence by his high-profile defense attorney during the final arguments. According to Politico, Michel, a member of the Fugees hip-hop group, was convicted in April of conspiracy, witness tampering, and acting as an unregistered foreign agent for China. He was accused of conspiring with Malaysian businessman Jho Low to funnel money to political campaigns through straw donors and influencing the Trump administration to drop a case against Low.

Michel’s new lawyers claim that his previous attorney, David Kenner, who has represented other prominent hip-hop artists such as Snoop Dogg and Suge Knight, relied on an experimental artificial intelligence (AI) program to draft the closing argument. However, it was later revealed that Kenner and his co-counsel had a financial stake in the AI program. A press release from EyeLevel, the firm behind the AI technology, boasted about its use in Michel’s trial, claiming it was a historic moment for generative AI in a federal trial.

Michel’s legal team argues that this constituted a clear conflict of interest and resulted in prejudicial ineffective assistance of counsel. They also allege that Kenner’s lack of preparation and understanding of the case led to another trial team member asking for outside help just two weeks before the trial. According to the Daily Beast, this member was shocked when Kenner asked him to explain the money laundering statute. Kenner was also accused of leaking documents ahead of the trial. Michel, who has been free on bond since 2019, is yet to face sentencing. (Read more Prakazarel “Pras” Michel stories.)
