Frustrated Bryce Young and Panthers suffer tough loss to Bears

CHICAGO — A 16-13 loss to the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field on Thursday night left Carolina Panthers’ rookie quarterback Bryce Young reeling as his teammates tried to console him at his locker.

Young, the top pick of the 2023 NFL draft, only managed to lead the Panthers to two field goals, with their sole touchdown coming from a 79-yard punt return in the first quarter against a defense that ranked 28th in the NFL entering Thursday’s game.

Meanwhile, Bears quarterback Tyson Bagent, an undrafted rookie, filled in for the injured starter Justin Fields and outshone Young during the game.

Unfortunately, Young couldn’t bring the Panthers any closer in the game’s final minute than a 59-yard field goal attempt by Eddy Pineiro that fell well short of tying the game. His final pass before that should have been intercepted after hitting linebacker Jack Sanborn in the hands.

Eddy Pineiro’s tying field goal attempt comes up short

Eddy Pineiro attempts to tie the score for the Panthers with a 59-yard field goal, but the kick comes up well short.

“Yeah, we’re all frustrated,” Young expressed after Carolina fell to 1-8, tying Arizona for the worst record in the NFL. “Frustrating situation to be in. It’s not who we are, who we want to be. We are what we put on tape, we are what we put on the field, and we have to be better.”

Young’s frustration led him to address his teammates in a way they hadn’t seen after any of the other losses, and both wide receiver Adam Thielen and tight end Hayden Hurst acknowledged his leadership.

On the other hand, head coach Frank Reich remained optimistic about Young’s resilience despite the mounting losses and offensive struggles. He sees the potential for improvement and a more united team effort to turn the season around.

Despite the disappointment, Young’s teammates still have faith in him and are willing to work together to address their shortcomings, especially with the next game against the Dallas Cowboys looming.
