From Type 2 to Electric ID Buzz: Tracing the Evolution of the VW Bus

Volkswagen’s iconic Type 2 bus, also known as the “bus,” has left an indelible mark on American culture. What started as a humble people-carrier transformed into a symbol of protest during the 1960s, attracting counterculture movements such as antiwar activists, hippies, and civil rights activists.

This enduring legacy spans from 1950 to 2003, with four generations of the Type 2 bus sold in the U.S., totaling almost 1 million deliveries. However, after the T4 “Eurovan” model, the popularity of vans declined, accompanied by some negative connotations.

Now, Volkswagen is looking to redefine the narrative with its latest offering, the ID. Buzz. “It’s our modern interpretation of what we believe a bus is like for the future,” says Jeffrey Lear, product manager of electric vehicles for Volkswagen of America. With the ID. Buzz, VW aims to create a new segment that goes beyond traditional vans or minivans.

The North American version of the ID. Buzz will feature three rows, seating up to seven people, and a 91 kWh battery. While specific range and pricing details are yet to be released, VW suggests that the range will be similar to the ID4, which can travel up to 275 miles per charge.

Lear explains that the ID. Buzz’s larger size and less aerodynamic design may result in slightly lower range compared to the ID4. Nevertheless, this highly anticipated electric vehicle represents a homecoming reunion for many enthusiasts.

While the bus has been manufactured in various locations around the world, including Germany, South Africa, and Australia, VW plans to produce the ID. Buzz exclusively in Hannover, Germany, for global export. Presales have already begun in Europe, with the North American release scheduled for 2024.
