A Teenager Overcomes Adversity and Attends University of Cambridge

A remarkable teenager, George Baldock, has defied the odds and is now pursuing his studies at the prestigious University of Cambridge. At the age of 11, George was compelled to leave mainstream education due to severe anxiety and depression, which made it impossible for him to cope in a regular classroom setting. Despite facing challenges, George managed to pass seven GCSEs with the help of his supportive teachers. Less than 5% of students in alternative provision education, including Pupil Referral Units (PRUs), receive high grades in Maths and English, making George’s achievement even more remarkable.

Currently studying history at Trinity College, Cambridge, George recognizes that he is a success story from a PRU but emphasizes the need for additional resources to ensure that all students have equal opportunities. He aims to break the stereotype associated with PRUs, stating, “People think we are all reprobates, there’s this idea that you go straight from a PRU to prison.” George’s journey is a testament to his resilience and determination.

George faced severe anxiety throughout his primary school years, which intensified during the transition to secondary school. He struggled to manage his anxiety, leading to his placement in an internal exclusion unit. Eventually, after a nine-month hiatus from school, George was allocated a place in an academy trust with four PRUs. Despite his initial skepticism, George credits his mother for pushing him to give it a chance. His mother’s unwavering support, along with the dedication of the headteacher Dr. Neil Barratt, who provided one-on-one tutoring, played a significant role in George’s progress.

George acknowledges the personalized support he received at the PRU, where the staff built relationships with individual students to create a positive learning environment. With their help, George passed seven GCSEs with remarkable grades, including a Grade 9 in history. He was even able to return to his previous mainstream school for sixth form and achieved A* grades in all of his A-Levels.

George’s success story became a reality when he received an offer to study at Cambridge. Initially apprehensive, George’s worries disappeared as he found a welcoming community at the university. Despite still experiencing anxiety, he is determined to overcome it and continue his studies.
