Friend and colleague describes Julian Sands as sincerely brave

Mike Figgis, the director who worked closely with the late British actor Julian Sands in eight films, expressed admiration for Sands’ self-assuredness and boldness. Sands’ death was confirmed after his remains were discovered in the Mount Baldy area of the San Gabriel mountains in southern California. Sands had been missing since January, when he failed to return from a hiking trip. Despite numerous unsuccessful searches by local authorities, Sands’ remains were eventually found by civilian hikers.

Reflecting on his first meeting with Sands in 1987, Figgis described the actor as “pushy” but was charmed by his enthusiasm. Despite not initially being suitable for the role, Figgis and Sands developed a strong friendship. Sands became a staple in Figgis’ films, with their collaboration spanning from 1993’s “The Browning Version” to 2020’s “Mother Tongue.” Figgis praised Sands for his charisma and confidence, which he believed stemmed from his striking looks.

Sands was known for his fearlessness and love for outdoor activities, including hiking. He had a reputation among his friends as an experienced and capable mountaineer. Despite extensive search efforts by the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Sands could not be located until now. The recent search involved over 80 volunteers and lasted for five months. Figgis acknowledged that it had become apparent that Sands would not be returning, but the confirmation of his death brought a sense of closure and sadness.

Sands rose to fame for his role in the 1985 film “A Room With A View,” alongside Helena Bonham Carter. He later ventured into the horror genre, appearing in movies such as “Gothic,” “Warlock,” and “Arachnophobia.” Sands was previously married to Sarah Sands, who would become the editor of Evening Standard and Today, and has a son with her. He also had two daughters with journalist Evgenia Citkowitz, whom he married in 1990. Sands’ untimely death is a significant loss for those who knew him well, including Figgis, who will deeply miss his friend.
