Friday Marks the Start of CHP’s Fourth of July ‘Maximum Enforcement’ Campaign

Starting Friday, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will enhance their presence on state highways and roads in Los Angeles County. This move comes as part of their annual Fourth of July weekend crackdown, aimed at apprehending drunk and drug-impaired drivers.

The statewide maximum enforcement period will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and continue until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday. During this time, all available officers will be actively patrolling the streets with a specific focus on targeted patrols.

“Maximum enforcement plays a crucial role in saving lives and ensuring the safety of everyone on our roads. It holds drivers accountable for dangerous and unlawful behaviors, such as speeding and impaired driving,” said Barbara Rooney, Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety. “No matter the distance you are traveling, it is essential to plan your journey safely before setting off. We want you and your loved ones to have a safe and joyful Fourth of July weekend.”

Last year’s Independence Day Maximum Enforcement Period resulted in nearly 1,000 DUI arrests statewide, an amount similar to this year’s campaign, according to the CHP. In the 2022 Fourth of July weekend alone, 44 individuals lost their lives in crashes within the CHP’s jurisdiction.

To prioritize the safety of all drivers, CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee emphasized a zero-tolerance approach towards any actions that endanger others on the road.

“Reckless driving is a significant concern on California’s roadways, and it is the responsibility of the CHP to ensure public safety,” stated Duryee. “Speed remains the primary cause of roadway accidents in our state, resulting in thousands of injuries and hundreds of fatalities each year. Slow down, help us create safer roads for everyone, abide by speed limits, avoid distractions while driving, wear your seatbelt, and drive sober.”

In addition to the CHP’s efforts, various law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles County will conduct their own targeted patrols to apprehend DUI suspects and other lawbreakers this holiday weekend.
