Frank LaRose, the Republican Secretary of State of Ohio, has officially announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate. He intends to join the GOP primary field in an attempt to unseat Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown in the upcoming elections.

LaRose, age 44, is currently serving his second term as Ohio’s elections chief, a position that garners significant attention. Despite the divisions within the Republican party caused by former President Donald Trump’s baseless claims regarding election integrity, LaRose managed to secure 59% of the statewide vote during his 2022 reelection campaign.

Upon declaring his bid, LaRose expressed his concerns about the country’s direction and his commitment to defending the values that have made America an emblem of hope. As a father of three young girls, he refuses to remain silent while the “woke left” attempts to jeopardize the American Dream.

Prior to becoming Secretary of State, LaRose served in the Ohio state Senate for eight years and holds the distinguished title of a U.S. Army Green Beret.

LaRose faces competition for the GOP nomination, including State Senator Matt Dolan, whose family owns the Cleveland Guardians baseball team, and Bernie Moreno, a wealthy Cleveland business owner who has received encouragement from Trump himself.

Dolan previously ran for Senate and invested nearly $11 million of his personal funds, ranking as the seventh-highest self-funder nationally according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Despite entering a crowded primary race at a later stage, Dolan managed to secure third place.

Moreno, who is the father-in-law of Trump-endorsed Republican Representative Max Miller, was the 17th-highest self-funder nationally during the 2022 Senate primary race, which featured numerous millionaires. Ultimately, Republican J.D. Vance, known for his memoir-turned-movie “Hillbilly Elegy,” emerged as the victor.

The Republican nominee will face Sherrod Brown, one of Ohio’s most successful and long-serving politicians. Brown has held various political positions, including 14 years as a congressman, two terms as secretary of state, and eight years as a state representative. Despite his past successes, Brown’s liberal voting record makes him more vulnerable this time around due to Ohio’s shifting political landscape. The state, once a reliable bellwether, now leans Republican, having twice elected Trump by wide margins. Aside from the state Supreme Court, Brown is the sole Democrat to win a statewide election since 2006.

Reeves Oyster, a spokesperson for Brown, emphasized the upcoming “slugfest” within the Republican party and urged Ohio voters to critically evaluate LaRose’s contributions to the state.
