Fox News Asks Republican Candidates About Climate Change During Debate

During the first Republican faceoff of the 2024 GOP presidential primary, Fox News took a different approach to climate change compared to its usual stance. In the past, Fox News has been criticized for downplaying the reality of climate change. However, in this debate, the network aired a recorded question from a teenage GOP activist who expressed concern that Republicans’ denial of climate change was alienating young voters. The moderators also listed recent climate-related disasters and asked the candidates if they believed human behavior is causing climate change.

One candidate, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, immediately dismissed the question and accused U.S. journalists of bias towards Democrats. The moderators did not press further, so Fox News did not receive a clear answer from the candidates. However, the ensuing discussion showed a slightly wider range of views on climate change than in previous Republican debates.

Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotechnology entrepreneur, made the first mention of energy issues in his opening remarks. He proposed a platform focused on increasing oil, gas, and coal production, as well as embracing nuclear power. However, when asked about climate change, Ramaswamy aligned himself with former President Donald Trump and called the climate change agenda a hoax.

Former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley deflected attention from the U.S.’s role as a major emitter of carbon dioxide and instead emphasized the need for China and India to reduce their emissions. Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina argued that bringing jobs back to the U.S. from China would be the best way to improve the environment. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum questioned the effectiveness of buying solar panels and batteries from China, claiming that they were produced using coal and discounted Russian oil and gas.

While the Republicans had varying views on climate change, President Joe Biden’s team had a simple and direct response to the question: “Climate change is real.”
